Jalapeno Popper Fillo Cups

Date nights have been few and far between lately and Paul and I have slowly realized that, with summer travel, we have to just take them where we can get them.  One of our favorite date nights lately has been to a local micro-brewery called Prison Brews.  They have a really fun menu and I usually end up getting something different each time we go.  They have an amazing patio and even on the hottest days, it is pleasant to sit outside with an IPA and my sweet hubby.

Regardless of what we order for our meal (portobello salad, wood-fired pizza, chipotle black bean burger…seriously, it’s all good!) we always, 100% of the time, without a doubt order their jalapeno poppers.  From the looks of them, they are just like any other jalapeno popper.  But one bite and you realize there is a little something special going on.  The cream cheese filling inside is so creamy and flavorful and almost has a sweetness to it.  The batter is perfectly crispy and the cherry-on-top, if you will, is that they serve them with sweet chili sauce.  Yes, you read that right.  I thought it was quite strange at first but you just have to trust me here.

So of course, I have to recreate these flavors in my own kitchen because, well, I crave those babies.  And I really needed a fun new recipe to share for the 4th of July that is easy to make, easy to transport and easy to eat and this one fits all three of those.  I used Athens Mini Fillo Shells, created a super flavorful jalapeno filling with cream cheese-cheddar-garlic-onion, baked them up and dunked them in the best sweet chili sauce and I’d be lying if I told you that Paul and I didn’t eat these for lunch last weekend.  Because we so did.  And I’m not ashamed at all.

Jalapeno Popper Fillo Cups

Yield: 30 fillo cups

Total Time: 20 min

A fun new take on the loved jalapeno popper - a savory & flavorful jalapeno cream cheese mixture is stuffed into Fillo cups and served with sweet chili sauce.


8 ounce cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup sharp white cheddar cheese, shredded
1/4 cup chopped jalapenos (about 4 fresh jalapenos, seeded & deveined)
1 green onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
Salt & pepper to taste
2 packages Athens Foods Mini Fillo Shells
1/2 cup sweet chili sauce (found near the hot sauces in the grocery store)


Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the mini fillo shells onto a 9x13 rimmed baking sheet.

In a large bowl, mix the cream cheese, cheddar cheese, jalapenos, green onion, and garlic until mixed well. Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste. Place about 2 teaspoons of the mixture into each fillo shell.

Bake in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes until the filling is warmed through. Serve with sweet chili sauce.
