Grilled Goat Cheese Sandwich with Honey-Roasted Grapes and Walnuts

I am so out of the loop on the food holidays, let alone the months that are dedicated to celebrating one kind of food.  Does anyone have a calendar that I can keep track of these note-worthy dates?  I’m sure by now you know that April celebrates all things grilled cheese.  It might be nearing the end, but I am here, in time to celebrate.

To say that I have discovered some outstanding grilled cheese recipes is an understatement.  In my opinion, the blogoshpere has been blown away by some amazingly creative grilled cheese sandwiches and paninis.  I am constantly brainstorming for recipe ideas and got a little carried away when I was thinking about grilled cheese sandwiches.  I actually made a list of about 18 ideas that I wanted to test and share.  Maybe I need to declare a grilled cheese month of my own and dedicate each post to a different sandwich.  Thoughts?

For some reason, though, I couldn’t stop thinking about roasted grapes.  For some reason, it was burned in my mind that roasted grapes would make the perfect partner to goat cheese in a grilled sandwich.  And I have to say that I was right.  I adore this sandwich, you guys.

Roasted grapes are sweet but have such deep flavor, and that concentrated flavor paired perfectly with the tang of goat cheese.  Walnuts and honey finish off the combination and my socks were completely knocked off by the way these flavors just meshed together.

And surprise!  This sammy is gluten free!  Udi’s Gluten Free is hosting a Grilled Cheese Recipe Challenge so I used their whole-grain sandwich bread for this one.  I do not consume a gluten free diet but I like to experience all kinds of foods.  I have read a lot about gluten free diets and I am always open to trying new things.  And I am honestly adding this bread to my regular shopping trip.  I have absolutely fallen in love with this bread.  I have eaten a slice per day for the last several and I just cannot get enough.  The texture and taste are both outstanding and the portion is perfect for me.  I was excited to find it at Trader Joe’s, too.

Grilled Goat Cheese Sandwich with Honey-Roasted Grapes and Walnuts Recipe

Yield: 2 sandwiches

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Total Time: 25 minutes

Gluten-free, grown-up, grape twist on a classic: the grilled cheese sandwich.


1 cup seedless grapes
1 1/2 tsp. grapeseed oil
Small pinch (less than 1/8 tsp.) kosher salt
2 tsp. honey, divided + more for drizzling
4-6 ounces goat cheese, crumbled
2 tsp. walnut halves
4 slices sandwich bread, like Udi’s Sandwich Bread


Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place the grapes on a small non-stick baking sheet. Drizzle with grapeseed oil, 1 teaspoon of the honey, and salt. Roast in the oven for 20-25 minutes, until the grapes begin to burst and shrivel. Remove and cool slightly.

To assemble sandwich, preheat a non-stick skillet over medium-low heat. Butter one side of each slice of bread. Lay one piece into the skillet, butter side down. Add half of the goat cheese, place half of the grapes on top. Drizzle with about a half-teaspoon honey and top with half of the walnuts. Place the second slice of bread on top, butter side up.

Cook the sandwich for 3-4 minutes on the first side, until the cheese starts to melt, and the bottom slice of bread is toasted. Flip the sandwich and cook for another 2 minutes or so, until the bread is toasted.

Remove from pan and serve with a drizzle of honey.

Cassie's Notes:
This can, of course, be made with any kind of bread you like.

I think this would be outstanding if some prosciutto or bacon added!

    i’m the same way- i never seem to hear about food holidays until the day of! national grilled cheese month is something i can definitely get behind, though. this sandwich looks divine – love the addition of roasted grapes. what a smart flavor combination!

    I just saw a post saying it is now national pretzel day. I cannot keep up with all that either. Your grilled cheese sandwich does look to be a special one, very unique and tasty ingredients. It does change the way I look at grilled cheese and that is a good thing. Well done!

    My husband has a gluten sensitivity and we are trying to find new recipes that cater to that. I would absolutely devour this in a heart beat and then make three more just for myself. He hates grapes and goat cheese… So yes, I’ll be making about ten of these for myself and not sharing!

    This is where I check for food holidays, I’m not sure if others go elsewhere but I find this one easy to follow: I’ve never heard of roast grapes before! Love the color it gives the sandwich.

    This is out of this world, Cassie! This is something I never would’ve thought to combine. I love goat cheese and how low-fat it is…so this is a great healthy grilled cheese!! I laughed out loud when I read “i was given free bread” lol, made me think of Hunger Games & Peeta..

    I just went back to eating gluten free and so happy to have found this post- what a tasty idea! One of the reasons I got so discouraged and went back to my old (bad) eating habits was because I was so bored with the gluten free foods. I *Love* grilled cheese sandwiches and never would have thougth of this.

    how vital is the grapeseed oil? I have never seen it in a store and I don’t like to buy an unusual ingredient for a small quantity like a tablespoon. I have olive oil always, though.

      Hi Margie, olive oil will work beautifully for this. I just like grapeseed oil in cases like these but it’s completely a personal preference!
