Popcorn Party Mix
You know what this Popcorn Party Mix is? It’s all four of the above-named favorites. I posted my recipe for Classic Party Mix last year and in that post, I mentioned that it’s something about putting up the tree and listening to Trans Siberian Orchestra Pandora station that makes me crave party mix. Once again, I couldn’t get this salty, savory snack out of my mind.
I decided that this year, the classic needed a new twist. I have had fun this year creating fun popcorn flavors (see: buffalo-parmesan; sriracha-ginger-sesame; salted caramel-cashew) so of course this idea seemed only natural. Are you afraid the popcorn will be soggy? Don’t be; I was afraid too. There is plenty of other stuff to help soak up the butter, the oven dries it out a bit, and the longer it sits, the better it gets.
I understand the need to keep some things classic. But for this one, I’m going to go ahead say a new twist is not really a bad thing. At all.
Popcorn Party Mix Recipe
Yield: 12 cups
Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes
Classic party mix flavors with a not-so-classic twist: popcorn!
6 cups popped popcorn, plain
3 cups pretzels
2 cups mixed nuts
1 cup peanuts
3/4 cup (12-tablespoons) unsalted butter, cubed
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
3 tsp. seasoned salt
1 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. onion powder
1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
Preheat the oven to 250 degrees. Combine the popcorn, pretzels, mixed nuts and peanuts in a large bowl.
Place the butter in a large roasting pan and heat in the oven until the butter is melted (even if the oven isn’t to temperature yet, it will still melt the oven and you can save one dirty dish. Remove when melted and add the Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder, onion powder and cayenne pepper and mix well. Pour in the popcorn-pretzel-nut mixture and use your hands to make sure it is fully coated in the butter/seasoning mixture.
Bake in the 250 degree oven for 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes.
While the mix bakes, line two large baking sheets with wax paper. After 30 minutes, remove the mix from the oven, stir one last time and then lay out in one even layer on the two baking sheets, dividing evenly. Let the mixture cool for about an hour at room temperature. Store in an airtight container.
If you use a blend of mixed nuts that has peanuts, you can use three cups of that mix.
