My Journey to Safer Living

Maya Angelou Quote I’m catching up on some long overdue posts today and I wanted to write a little about my recent move to join Beautycounter as a consultant.

Over the last few years we have been on a journey to clean up potential toxins in our home. Most of us are aware of the way the food we eat impacts our bodies, (“you are what you eat”) but it was a big “ah-ha” moment when I realized that overall health can also be impacted by what I am putting on my body as well. Then I started to learn more about how personal care products are virtually unregulated and ingredients found in our personal care and beauty products can contain thousands of chemicals known to adversely affect health.

I was introduced to Beautycounter a couple of years ago and, to be completely transparent, I was super skeptical for many reasons. I said I would NEVER join a network marketing or direct sales company. Well, never say never friends, because here I am. First, I was impressed by the priority placed on education – we believe our story is best-told friend-to-friend. Second, BC is committed to the mission of getting safer products into the hands of everyone and they are doing that by being transparent in ingredient sourcing, lobbying for more regulation in the industry and to get the word out to everyone about the need for safer products.

Once I started using some of the products, I was hooked not only because of how well the products work, but also because I quickly became passionate about the company’s mission. I have had to step way out of my comfort zone here but I’m willing to be a bit vulnerable if it means being able to join the movement for safer beauty products.

Beautycounter has an entire arm dedicated to pushing for more health protective laws. Gregg Renfrew, BC’s founder & CEO, and 100 of our consultants were in Washington DC in March for our 5th birthday having in-person meetings with members of congress regarding industry regulation. We feel we can be pro-regulation while simultaneously being pro-commerce. This article really articulates what the company is doing to live into the mission of getting safer products into the hands of everyone.

Never List Beautycounter has created “The Never List” which is made up of over 1,500 questionable or harmful chemicals and ingredients that we never use in our products. All of the ingredients we do use are rigorously tested and responsibly sourced to ensure safety while maintaining the highest efficacy.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) uses the power of research and information to protect public health and the environment. Their Skin Deep Cosmetics Database allows you to search over 73,000 products for hazardous ingredients. www.ewg.org. It’s FREE to use and has a scanning function on the app for you to check products quickly. I use the app constantly and it’s extremely eye-opening!

After about six months of using Beautycounter I have so many favorite products and I absolutely love the opportunity to get to share those with my friends and family!  In addition to Beautycounter though, I have really focused on cleaning up other areas of our life, like cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, and other personal care products and I am planning to continue to share the journey here over the coming months.  If you have any questions, comments or suggestions please let me know.

Thanks for following along on this journey!
