Greek 7 Layer Dip

I am one of those football fans who, come late January/early February, becomes a football fan just in time for the Super Bowl.  (Read that as: just in time for Super Bowl food.)  I have nothing against football.  In fact, I used to be a pretty big fan.  I was once a Fantasy Football champ.  And am still a closet Tony Romo fan (go Cowboys!)  But it’s just one of those things that we don’t pay much attention to anymore.  And don’t think that we are discriminating – we really don’t pay much attention to many sports at all.

Except when it comes to the social aspect of sports.  We will never pass up the chance to spend some time with friends at a Mizzou football game.  We will never say no to an invite to a local restaurant or bar to catch a rugby game.  We usually try to make it to Busch Stadium once per year to catch the boys in red and you better believe that on Super Bowl Sunday, you will find us somewhere in mid-Missouri with our favorite snacks in hand taking in some football.

You could say that we are definitely the kind of football fans who watch the Super Bowl for the food.  And for the halftime show.  Side note: I’m not sure anyone can beat Bruno Mars’ performance last year.  I’m just saying, Katy Perry has some big shoes to fill.

And while she is dancing her heart out, I am going to be filling my belly with Greek 7 Layer Dip!  My reasoning for making this dip is simple – our neighbors invited us over to watch the game when Mizzou played in this year’s SEC Championship.  I was at the store when we got the invitation and the avocados looked so good, so I grabbed some and made the traditional 7 layer dip with refried beans, seasoned sour cream, tomatoes, guacamole, etc. and served it with chips.  I think between the 4 of us we ate pretty much the whole thing and what was leftover, Paul and I ate for lunch the following day.

And then my friends at ALDI got in touch to ask if I could do a new recipe with a Super Bowl/Football Food theme and I immediately thought “7 layer dip”, but knew I needed a new twist on it.  They liked the idea, so I ran to Aldi and here is what I found:

This version is still extremely simple and super people-pleasing.  The layers consist of: hummus; artichokes; lemon-dill Greek yogurt; black olives; grape tomatoes; green onions; feta cheese.  And I served it with naan bread.

And I was able to get all of these items at my local ALDI store, plus a week’s worth of groceries for about$60.  Oh, and see that cute bowl in the picture, I found that at my ALDI store as well.  For $9!  The set came with three glass bowls, all different sizes and all with fitting, airtight lids.  I call that a score!

Greek 7 Layer Dip

Yield: ~6 cups (serves 8-10 people)

Total Time: 20 min

Simple 7 Layer Dip with a Greek twist with hummus, artichokes, olives, tomatoes, feta cheese and more!


1 cup Friendly Farms All-Natural Plain Greek Yogurt
4 ounces Happy Farms Crumbled Feta Cheese, divided
1 tsp. lemon juice
1/2 tsp. dried dill
1/4 tsp. Stonemill Essentials Paprika
10 ounce container Little Salad Bar Roasted Red Pepper Hummus
12 ounce jar of Tuscan Garden Artichokes, drained and roughly chopped
3/4 cups Tuscan Garden Black Olives, halved
1 cup grape tomatoes, halved
3 green onions, chopped
Specially Selected Naan, pita bread or chips for serving


In a small bowl, mix the Greek yogurt, 2 tablespoons of the feta cheese, lemon juice, dried dill, paprika and a small pinch of salt until combined. Set aside.

Spread the hummus in the bottom of a 6-7 cup bowl or a 9-inch square baking dish. Spread the artichokes on top of the hummus in an even layer. Top the artichokes with the Greek yogurt mixture and smooth it out on top. Top the Greek yogurt layer with the black olives, tomatoes, green onions, and then with the remainder of the feta cheese.

Serve immediately, or refrigerate, covered, until ready to serve. Serve with pita bread, naan bread, or chips.
