Spring in Missouri seemed to start earlier this year than in years past.  It was 70 degrees some days in January and February and it was BLISSFUL!  We took tons of long walks – we bought a hiking toddler backpack and so far it’s been a hit.  Paul loves carrying it, and Lucy loves sitting up to see the sights.  That is, until she falls asleep.

We had some visitors for a few days when our nephews were on spring break.  We played until we couldn’t play anymore.  Lucy never stops moving these days.

We took our first ever trip to the St. Louis Zoo.  Lucy was semi-impressed.  She liked the elephants and the monkeys (or maybe that was me).  I think that if we took her back today she would be so much more impressed – she is so into animals.  She even says “flamingo” when we pull our her flamingo jammies.

One of her favorite books is “Moo Baa La La La”.  She insists on sleeping with it and knows almost the whole book, word for word.  “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” is another favorite.  Animals!

Newborn Lucille

Bringing an actual person into the world, who is 100% dependent on adult humans, is one of the scariest and most rewarding things I will ever experience.  After 40+ weeks of preparing for her arrival, I was surprised at how unreal this feeling was.  This tiny human was counting on me to not screw it up.  There is so much pressure just in that sentence.  And of course, I have screwed up plenty thus far.  But looking back at the last 15 months, I think I have done some good things too.  I, along with tons of help from Paul, our parents, our friends and other family, have managed to keep her fed, mostly healthy, clean and pretty darn happy, or so it seems.

She is thriving, actually.  She is in the 80th percentile for weight – girlfriend loves food.  Obviously she would love food.  Of course, because she is my daughter, I think she is extremely advanced.  She is probably right on par educationally, but hey, I think she walks on water.

Lucille turned ONE!  What a year it was.  People say it every.single.day but you can’t really understand how fast it truly goes by until you wake up one day with a brand new baby, and the next day that baby is a sweet little toddler, walking all over the place, saying new words everyday.

Her birthday was on a Sunday so we had family here all weekend and celebrated with a bright, sprinkle-y cake that she LOVED.  She hadn’t had a ton of sugar up to that point but she devoured it, and then later when seeing the cake on the counter, she insisted on more.  And she only turns one once so of course, she got some more!

I’m finally getting around to sharing some six month shots of Lucille, annnnd she turned seven months old on Monday.  Such is life these days!

I keep thinking each stage is going to be my favorite, and then the next just gets better.  Right now Lucy is sitting up like a champ.  She is scooting backward and I feel like she is going to pop up and crawl at any given second.  She is sleeping anywhere from 10-12 hours at night, takes a few naps during the day, and is typically a happy, smiley, easy-going girl.  On Mother’s day, she said “mama” and I almost died.  My heart grows every single day!

We started her on some food around 4 months but it took us a while to really figure out what we were doing, and which direction we wanted to go.  We started with purees, but I wasn’t convinced that was the best.  So we tried a little baby-led weaning but she never really caught on to feeding herself, so in the last few weeks we have gone back to purees and it has worked extremely well the second time around.  She LOVES sweet potatoes, avocados.  She’s not too crazy about green beans and bananas.  Other foods she will take or leave but mostly leaves.  She also absolutely loves water, especially when she can take a sip out of mom’s or dad’s cup.

Bath time is her favorite.  Since she is sitting up now I have added some toys to bath time and I swear she could sit in there forever and play.  She loves being outside and we have been taking lots of walks lately during which she enjoys sitting in her stroller taking in everything that is going on around her.

She also loves paper ANYTHING.  Like, she wants to chew on it until it’s nothing.  Also loves her toes and Emma the cat.  She’s also waving “bye bye”

We are so so so much in love with this girl.

The Difference a Year Makes

I have just spent a glorious weekend away with Paul and Lucille and now that Sunday is winding down, and we prepare for a new week, I decided to sit down and put into words this blog post that has been swirling in my head for a month solid.

A couple of weeks ago, I realized that it’s been FIVE years since I first published a blog post here.  Now It’s been over a year since my last recipe post.  Blog posts in 2015 were sporadic, at best.  I most-certainly took full advantage of having something else (growing a human) occupy the space in my life which had previously been occupied by prop collecting, recipe development, food photography, and blog posts.  And in hind-sight, I have absolutely no regrets about taking the last year (mostly) off.

When I wrote my first pregnancy post, I shared that I had absolutely no idea what becoming a mother would mean for the blog and honestly, I still don’t know.  What I do know is that I would much rather spend my evening and weekends with my husband and daughter, rather than cranking out several new recipes for the following week.  I know, without a doubt, that I am done with the hamster wheel of blogging.  Blogging is so, so, so great.  And for those of you who are making a great full-time living out of it, I am so happy for you.  I tried it and found that it just wasn’t for me.  Please know that I’m not knocking what you are doing.  I just found that it’s not my thing.  The endless social media, the constant comparison trap in which I found myself lingering, the never-ending race to create unique and exciting content…that is just not what I started my blog for, and those things just totally drained me.  And I don’t have time or energy to spare on things that drain me.

I continue to follow and read lots of blogs, when I have a few free minutes here and there.  I still make recipes from my favorite blogs. I still check in on social media, but mostly Instagram which as become Lucy-gram and I am not sorry for that!  She’s kind of cute.

Three months in with my little love bug and I fall in love with her more and more every day.  She has the sweetest disposition and usually has a huge dimply smile on her face.  She is loving tummy time lately and is really working on rolling over, but is not quite there yet.  She loves “talking” to herself in the mirror on her play mat.  She loves her daddy and has him wrapped pretty tightly around her tiny finger.

One month!  I don’t know how this happened.

First, let me introduce Lucille Jane, born October 9th at 7:46pm, weighing 8 pounds 2 ounces, 19.5 inches long.  She had a full head of dark hair and is as perfect as can be.

Her birth was for the most part, thankfully, uneventful.  I was two days overdue and we had gone to see the doctor, anticipating that we would be scheduling an induction for the following week.  My blood pressure was extremely high and my doctor sent us right over to the hospital.  I was admitted and hooked up to an IV and pitocin was started by am 11:30am.  By 1:30pm my water had broken on it’s own.  The hospital staff was trying to keep my blood pressure regulated.  It was high so they administered some medication to bring it down.  Then when my epidural was administered, it tanked, so I was given more medication to bring it back up.  That part of the day was completely a blur, but the good news is that my epidural worked wonderfully and I wasn’t feeling a thing.

The day actually flew by.  The whole blood pressure up-and-down thing took some time to regulate and there were a lot of nurses in and out helping.  Both our families were there and they spent the afternoon chatting while I dozed on and off and the rest of the day was so uneventful that I don’t remember much of it. To tell you the truth I don’t even remember how long I pushed before Lucy arrived.  It was a crazy emotional and rewarding experience and I would do it all again in a heartbeat.  The end result (her!) was 100% worth any kind of pain or downside to pregnancy and labor.
