A Little Hope
I feel it on my heart to share with you a handful of ways that we, as a community, can spread some hope today. Let’s spread a little hope.
As you might know, I am working with Verizon Wireless with their Savvy Gourmets program. With this program, I have a snazzy Motorola Xyboard to try out. It’s been a dream in the kitchen; I love using it to look up recipes, take recipe notes and even photograph along the way. But one thing that I really love about Verizon is that they care. They care about people and they care about causes that help people.
October is a lot of things: It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month; It’s Domestic Violence Awareness month; and today is World Food Day. My tagline reads “expressing my love for food, for people, for life. Mostly, I dedicate the pages of this blog to food, with life mixed in. But today I want to focus on people. I believe that we can make a difference in the lives of people. We are called to do this on a daily basis and the truth is that there are so many opportunities that are readily available. So, today, I am taking a break from the snacks, desserts and meals to share a few. I really hope you will be encouraged to at least share this post. Share it with your friends, family and readers (if you are a blogger.) Spread the word that, together, WE can really make a difference.
1. In support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Verizon is hosting a photo contest to share the message of hope. Please consider submitting a photo and also encourage your readers to enter their best photo symbolizing hope (taken with your Verizon Wireless Smartphone or Tablet). With each submission, $1 will be donated to HopeLine. Visit this link for more information and to enter. I’d love to see them too, tweet them to me or tag me on Facebook!
2. It’s World Food Day – TODAY! Alice at Savory Sweet Life has posted a beautiful story explaining her experiences on a recent trip to Ethiopia. I was struck by these words that she wrote: “Change can only effectively happen when enough people extend a hand of hope and for the sake of compassion and the universal language of love.” That sums it up. Let’s just love. Alice will also be sharing a post full of sweet potato recipes today. It takes only a bit of willingness to take the action needed. Alice is working with ONE, an organization striving to help fight extreme global poverty and preventable diseases through advocacy outreach movements, encouraging people like you and me to take action with our voices! They make it simple to advocate on the behalf of those who cannot advocate for themselves. Will you help sign up and be a part of this? I already have and it took about 5 seconds of my time! (Hashtag is #WFD2012)
3. It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As I mentioned yesterday, a group of bloggers will be dedicating recipe posts this week to pink foods and/or foods that are known to be cancer-fighting/preventing as a way to increase knowledge and awareness of breast cancer prevention and the cure. I would love if you would help spread the word, or even share a recipe that you love that is either pink or made with cancer-fighting ingredients. Most of us, in some form or another, have been effected by breast cancer and it’s so important to remember that early detection is key to fighting breast cancer.
Thank you for allowing me to share what’s on my heart. I love you guys!
