20 Week Pregnancy Update

Baby Laemmli - 20 weeks

HALFWAY!!  We are halfway to meeting our little babe!  The pregnancy is flying by and I’m so happy to say that I’m feeling much better than I was during the first 14 weeks.  I started to get some energy back around week 12, and then had another week or two of nausea and fatigue, and then things really started to look up!

Since the last update, things have been excitingly normal, I guess.  We have seen the doctor a few times and had our 20 week anatomy scan (see above!)  I was beyond nervous for that ultrasound.  I hadn’t slept the night before because I had a terrible feeling something was wrong.  The minute the technician put the wand on my belly, I saw the little babe wiggling around (like crazy!) and I felt an immediate sense of relief.  We saw two arms, two hands, two legs and two feet, along with a very strong beating heart, a brain, a spine, and lots of things inbetween.  Seeing our baby’s beating heart on that screen is one of the best experiences of my life so far.  I can only imagine that meeting the baby in person will top it at this point.

The baby was sitting cross-legged so even if we had wanted to know the sex, we would have been out of luck.  Neither of us really have strong feelings either way…we have both been feeling boy lately, but it changes pretty frequently!  We have thrown around some name ideas, but we probably won’t settle 100% on names until we are holding the baby in our arms.

As I mentioned, I am feeling much better, physically.  My appetite came back, full force, around week 14.  It’s not that I craved any certain thing, just that I wanted any and all food.  Luckily I have not had any food aversions, and no crazy cravings.  Although, I can’t seem to get enough good cinnamon rolls.  I had tried a few here and there and nothing seemed to satisfy my craving so I finally made some from scratch and they were the best thing I’ve tasted in a long time!

I’m keeping the fridge stocked with lots of fresh fruits and veggies and good protein, but also trying to not feel bad when I indulge a little bit too.

Along those same lines, I am working on a healthy psychological relationship with my body and weight gain.  I knew that this would be somewhat of a struggle for me.  Between my first doctor’s appointment, and my 14 week appointment, I had lost one pound, and then by the 18 week appointment, I had gained a total of 9.  And I have probably gained another pound or two since then.  All-in-all, I am right on track where I should be, and I’m not weighing myself except at the doctor, but that 9 pound gain kind of took the wind out of me.

I’m mostly trying to focus on fueling my body well, walking as much as possible, and resting when I need to in order to be the healthiest I can be for this little babe who is growing inside of me.  These little things won’t matter in the end as long as he/she is healthy.  I just have to get over myself enough to remember that each day!

I finally felt the baby move this week!  As I mentioned, I had been so nervous going into our 20 week ultrasound.  I had felt a lot of cramping the week prior, I hadn’t felt any movement yet and had completely let my mind get the best of me.  But then it seems like all of the sudden the next day I was feeling these little waves and jolts of movement.  I actually think I had been feeling these for a week or two prior, I just hadn’t realized it.  Everyone talks about how they feel like “flutters” and that just isn’t what they feel like to me.  It’s so strange to me that pregnancy is so different from person to person!  And now I feel the movement a lot, especially when I’m sitting down!  I’m guessing the little babe is just kind of cramped in there when I’m sitting versus standing!

Paul and I both are amazed and just completely overwhelmed that we get to be parents to this little life.  I find it mind-blowing that I have so much love for this person who I have never met!  I can’t wait to know what he/she looks like – what color hair, what color eyes, who’s facial features does he/she have?  Just 130-something days to go!  Ahhhh!!

You look BEAUTIFUL!! Once my babes started moving…they never stopped. It’s so fun, but once you get to around 38 weeks…you literally feel feet in your ribs. I remember pushing on their feet to get them to change positions! Pregnancy is just weird.

Can’t wait to see if it’s a baby boy or girl!

Ah, loving these updates! You are absolutely adorable, but I totally get you with the body struggles. I also seem to have several week periods when I gain nothing and then I gain 10 pounds in 5 weeks. It’s a little overwhelming, but also amazing and awesome to see your body change to sustain another life. It seems like I had a panic attack before just about every appointment in the first half of pregnancy, but those kicks definitely are reassuring. And when your hubby can feel them too, it’s just the best! Wishing you a very happy, healthy, normal second trimester!

    Wow, you’re pregnant – Congratulations!

I just discovered your blog when searching for tips on how I should start my own food blog. It’s funny, my husband and I are just discussing having a baby, so I now hope to get tips on that front too :). Good luck and keep writing.
